Guitar Hero at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Among Rock Generations

It has been two decades since the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the tools to feel like a rock star. Figuratively speaking, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that anyone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before a packed living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the screen synchronized to the music. Every sequence mimicked specific notes, creating the sensation of an authentic performance.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, which was purchased by Activision in 2006. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable series which made a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists featured, introducing classic groups to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, recalls the early financial challenges in securing the recordings – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music since the cost was so high,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as the Who – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when Guitar Hero took off, and record sales airtime increased, everyone wanted to be in.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their kids to the songs they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Irish group one featured act had their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist remembers the way the game revived classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, younger audience. Generally this had been considered outdated material, but then once it got included in the game and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it was cool. This validated it, and got rid of the outdated label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album remained unreleased stateside, so Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the band as they went on US tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Titles Enduring Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and related stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the band more money compared to their records. It moved more than half a million units in its first week, while sales of their songs saw an increase significantly at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Recently, an online personality completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics and extensive customisation options. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone played at increased tempo and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

DragonForce had already completed a profitable run when their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that we were records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero was so immense that it has threatened to overshadow everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in a trailer for a major film. “Previously I thought otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only hear a single track, it’s totally cool – each person has their own path in music and I'm pleased we played a role in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact from the Iconic Controller

The best promotion, be it for cars, clothes or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “That’s exactly what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a rock star on the stage. Since the beginning, the creators felt that humans have a natural human desire to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

Most installments were released over a mere five-year period between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments died down, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games like the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the community active, and there’s set to be something from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has begun work on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed such titles could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “With abundant new music it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. There’s no reason for it to continue for future fans.”
